Search Console shows impressions but no clicks: what it means
Impressions without clicks means Google showed your page, but nobody chose it. That is not a penalty. It is almost always one of four things, and your own Search Console data tells you which.
1. You are on page two or lower
An impression counts even when your result sits far down the page or on page two, where very few people look. Open Performance, add the Average position column and sort by impressions. If most of your impressions come from positions above 10, the fix is ranking higher, not a better title: pick one page and make it the most complete answer for its main search.
2. The title does not match the search
If a page ranks in the top 5 for a search and still gets almost no clicks, people are reading the title and choosing someone else. Look at the Queries for that page. Rewrite the title so the words people typed appear first, and say plainly what they will get.
3. The answer is already on Google
For quick facts (definitions, hours, conversions, a single number), Google or its AI Overview often answers on the results page itself. Those searches rarely send clicks to anyone. Put your effort into searches that need a page: comparisons, how-tos, prices, tools.
4. The searches are not really yours
Sometimes a page shows up for a search that only loosely matches it, and people skip it because it is not what they wanted. That is fine. Check which searches bring impressions and focus on the ones that describe what you actually offer.
How to tell which one in two minutes
- Performance, Pages tab: find pages with many impressions and few clicks.
- Click one, switch to Queries, and look at position next to each search.
- Position above 10: cause 1. Position 1 to 5 with a low click rate: cause 2 or 3. Searches that do not fit the page: cause 4.
Or ask your AI
SearchLink connects Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor to your Search Console. Ask "Which pages get impressions but no clicks, and why?" and it does the steps above for every page, then offers to rewrite the titles on WordPress for you and measures whether it worked four weeks later.
