AI Overviews took my clicks: what to do about it
If your rankings held but clicks fell, an AI Overview on top of your results is a likely reason. You cannot switch it off for other people, but you can tell whether it is the cause and move your effort to where clicks still happen.
What the numbers say
Pew Research Center tracked 68,879 real Google searches by 900 US adults in March 2025. When an AI summary appeared, people clicked a regular result in 8% of visits, against 15% when there was no summary. Links inside the summary got clicks in about 1% of visits.
Summaries were not everywhere: about 18% of searches had one. They showed up for 60% of searches phrased as questions and 53% of searches of ten words or more, but only 8% of one or two word searches.
Is it happening to you? Check in two minutes
- In Search Console, open Performance and compare the last 3 months with the 3 before.
- Look at Queries where average position stayed about the same but click rate (CTR) dropped. Same position, fewer clicks is the pattern AI Overviews leave.
- Open the new generative AI performance report (rolled out to all sites on 31 August 2026). It shows how often your pages appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode. It does not show clicks or queries yet, so read it next to the normal report.
Four things that still work
- Be one of the sources. Pew found 88% of summaries cite three or more sources. A cited page gets its link shown inside the summary. Answer the question in the first two or three sentences of the page, then go deeper.
- Go after searches that need a visit. Short searches, product and price comparisons, tools and local searches get fewer summaries and still send clicks. Quick facts and definitions rarely will.
- Rewrite titles for what is left. When fewer people click, the result that does get clicked is the one whose title matches the search most exactly. Put the words people typed first.
- Measure, do not guess. Note the day you change a page, then compare clicks against the rest of your site over the same weeks. A seasonal dip hits every page; an AI Overview hits some searches.
Let your AI do the digging
SearchLink connects Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor to your Search Console. Ask "Which searches lost clicks while my position held?" It finds them, checks whether AI answers cite you for your real searches, and can rewrite titles on WordPress for you, then tells you four weeks later if it worked.
